How to Back up Your Files on a Laptop

Normally backing up files is done by onboard utilities under user control.   These are provided on most high quality PCs.  However, some people are first-time PC users running Notebooks that are not delivered with these utilities.   Therefore we are including this simple but necessary article on how to backup data files on your laptop.

In order to accomplish this operation you must have either a laptop with a CD/RW, rewritable DVD, or ZIP/Pin drive – i.e. a drive or USB connected external drive that can burn high-volume data files.  If your laptop did not come with a high-performance file handler that allows you to collect copies in a specified folder, you will have to handle the files individually.

The standard way to accomplish this is to insert a new, initialized CD/DVD into the rewriteable drive and launch any standard CD/DVD burn utility.  Your laptop may have such a utility if it was delivered with an onboard rewritable drive.  You can also download a free one.

Make sure that – if necessary – you have selected ‘Data’ as your operation.  Drag all the files to be backed up into the output space or directory bin one at a time.   Some software utilities do not provide this convenience so you may have to select each file individually as you scan directories and folders.  Most of these utilities will provide you with a running total of the gross megabyte size of the backup total.   When you get to 4.5G you should stop selecting and execute the burn step.  This will fill a standard 4.8G disk.

Some software will let you know that the file storage issue is under its control and you can simply continue selecting files until you have them all.  As the actual burn takes place the utility will control the removal and insertion of blank disks.

Always make sure that you use the burn utility in a test mode first by using a test file.  This will verify that you are copying not moving and subsequently deleting the files that you wish to backup.

Lastly, you should organize and label the CDs accordingly.   Then, as you execute subsequent backups you can reuse the CDs/DVDs and update the labels.

Whenever you do any backup of files on a laptop or any PC make sure you run a quality Windows registry package.  You can purchase and download a top registry software package that cleanses your registry of bogus records automatically.  They also do the other registry fix functions that accomplish any needed Registry Repair after the backup operation.
