<p>The most natural way to breathe is from the abdomen but when people get stressed or anxious they will often start breathing from their chest. <p>Proper Breathing to Relax</p>
<p>Here is a simple technique that you can use for treating panic attacks. Practicing this technique will help you use it when you are starting to feel anxious. (note: it&#8217;s best to try this laying or sitting down at first, if you feel dizzy or uncomfortable at any time stop immediately):</p>
<p>Sit or lay down and try to relax as much as possible. Place a hand on your stomach and inhale slowly through your nose. Your hand should rise and fall with each breath if you are breathing with your diaphragm.</p>
<p>Exhale through your mouth without holding your breath. You don&#8217;t want to force the air out but let it exit your lungs naturally.</p>
<p>Try repeating this several times.</p>
<p>You can add another level to this relaxing breathing technique by turning it into a breathing mediation. To do this, you want to focus your attention on your breathing, letting all other thoughts drift away. As the air moves in and out of your body, keep your attention focused on how you hand rises and falls or how the breath moves in and out of your nose and mouth.</p>

Self help approaches vary significantly if for no other reason than there is so much relevant information. The trick is to learn the essentials without getting bogged down with information that you really don&#8217;t need to know at the beginning.</p>
<p>With respect to skill-building, a program of self help for panic attacks must contain a logical, incremental set of steps for learning the skills for stopping and preventing panic attacks.  These skills range from simple relaxation skills to &#8220;surfing&#8221; skills during a panic attack.  It&#8217;s even important to think of adjusting your attitude at the right moment as a necessary skill.</p>

Calming and stopping panic attacks is not too different from getting a boisterous St. Bernard to do what you want him to do. <p>Think about it.  If the next step is just too frightening to consider, then it becomes more likely that you will give up and quit the program.  On the other hand, if the next step is too easy then you won&#8217;t make enough progress to make it worth your time.  Programs of self help for panic attacks work best if there is a straightforward way to adjust the pace as you go.</p>
