Did you know that the United States has some of the toughest anti-drug laws in the world? Ironically, in spite of this, the country also has the highest level of illegal drug use in the world.

There’s over a hundred million frequent drinkers in the US, and many estimates are suggesting that nearly ten million of them could very well be considered alcoholics. Meaning that roughly 10% of drinkers has a problem with alcohol. Regardless if it is due to peer pressures or actual physical reliance, it can be very hard to quit, but year after year many people make that decisions and begin the alcohol detox process.

It’s every parent’s nightmare: that the child they once held in their arms as a baby might someday get involved, possibly addicted, to drugs and/or alcohol.

Indeed, the challenge for anyone conducting an intervention concerns itself mostly with hope: You’ve got to keep your focus trained on the prospect of a brighter tomorrow, even as today seems so impossibly broken. A successful intervention, in the end, is one that’s built on faith, and on optimism. If the addict you care about is going to get better, he’s got to be able to see the daylight through the gloom.

For most people, even today, the word alcoholic still carries a lot of shame. It suggests a damaged person, somebody who is different from the rest of society, who has a different psychological or genetic makeup and therefore can’t drink. It is very difficult for most people to admit that they are different in any way from everyone else; it is even more difficult if that difference carries with it a sense of shame.
